MR. MOCHA
10 yo Male Chocolate Point Ragdoll

February update: Yaaaaaaay, I had my dental work done. It is finished. Yaaaaay. It is so great. And they only took out some of my teeth. I have most of them left including my three front canines (I lost the fourth a long time ago). I am a happy cat. Thank you everybody who helped me. (It hurt! My foster thinks my whole expression is different, more relaxed.) This is so great. So look now I am really ready for my new home. Come get me, I want to play and help you with your chores and follow you about and make sure you are entertained. It has been so long now since I was in a home. Come get me. Can you see how beautiful I am? And HAPPY!!

September Update: His foster mom says—The problem with Mr Mocha is that he is such a handsome, gorgeous guy that he looks young. How do you determine the age of a kitty who looks so healthy and vibrant? You look at his teeth and if his teeth are in terrible shape then how do you assess the age? The shelter said 2 to 4 yrs old, one vet said maybe 8 yrs, and another maybe 10. It is likely he is not a youngster nor an oldster, rather a kitty somewhere in the middle. The trouble is he is gorgeous and doesn't give other clues as to his age. All are guesses.

What is very apparent is that he is a dude. He loves to lay on a high perch, nonchalant, Mr. Cool, with his front legs crossed observing the foolish world below. He has been through a hard time that we can only guess at and was depressed and hidden for a while as he overcame whatever traumas he had to go through. (See his first bio and history below.) He is resilient as so many kitties are and has taken up his kitty duties once again including playing with feathers and amusing his humans. In his previous adopter's home he adapted quickly to their lives, used under-the-bed as a security only at first and then soon was "following them around like a little puppy dog". They called him "a love muffin".

He is definitely an adorable guy with a big heart and an entertaining, loving nature. He is no longer shy. Except for his teeth he is healthy whatever his age.

He will be fine without his teeth. I have known 5 or 6 cats with no teeth (and currently have one). It doesn't matter to them at all. They can eat wet and dry just as well as when they had teeth. I wouldn't feed the largest sized kibble but the regular small pellet food kitties inhale without use of their teeth anyway. (I have seen enough whole kibble thrown up in the vomit of a zillion cats to know they don't chew it.) Actually when there are no teeth there is the silver lining of knowing you will have no future vet bills for dental cleaning or extractions...

So here he is, this lovely cat back again. What a rocky road he has had. Abandoned in a foreclosed home, taken to a shelter, then recently so loved in a new home and yet abandoned again.

----------

Mr. Mocha has advanced periodontal disease and full mouth stomatitis. He needs to have all of his teeth extracted. Our initial estimates are in the range of $2,000 for blood panel and dental surgery. We are going to check with other vets to see if we can get this price reduced by $500. PLease help us help Mr. Mocha by donating!

UPDATE: We have now learned that we can probably get all his dental work done for $1000.

Here is is original bio of May 6, 2009 and the story of how he ended up in a shelter.

This is another foreclosure story. This kitty was left with random debris in an vacated home. No one knows how many days he was there alone in the sudden silence of an empty house. He was probably given an open bag of dry food and a bowl of water. At least I hope so. Far from being glad to see humans, he was so distraught when he was found that the police were called in to catch him in a trap. He was totally wigged out. Being a sensitive kitty, which all Ragdolls are, he must have picked up the distress and extreme emotion of his family as they hurriedly packed what little they could and left.

The police took him to the local shelter where his distress continued. They said at the shelter he was "very shy and unadoptable." Luckily he came to us and we have been working to help him recover. Unlike Konstantine, the Maine Coon, who became depressed and passive in his shelter experience, Mr Mocha became sort of permanently wide eyed and wary. Chronically frightened. For a month he stayed on a high shelf with that kind of clutched look in his eyes. "From which direction is something terrible going to happen to me next.?"

Fortunately he has now begun to enjoy himself and relax a little, so I am posting him to the site. It started one day when I was scratching his rear next to his tail, suddenly he straightened his legs and put his tail up in the air in pleasure." Aha !! " I said, entirely pleased. If you rub his neck he leans his head down into your hand in that characteristic kitty way of enjoyment. He is coming along fine now. I would guess it might take him a little while further to get over his recent experiences.

He is a beautiful boy. Not one of the huge Ragdolls, he is fairly average size. With his very soft fur of an intense rich brown, his great contrasts of light and dark make him very striking . He loves attention from everybody as long as he is approached slowly and gently. Eating has never been a problem for him, he likes wet and dry food .He uses his litterbox perfectly. He is an easy care kitty.

So far we have not yet seen him play. He still has a way to go as he returns to his previous happy kitty self. Once you establish trust with him - which might take a bit of time - he will be a very grateful loving guy. Probably he should not go to a home with little kids and we are not sure how he would do with cats and dogs. He might be just fine with them. He needs a quiet , secure home. No more drama, upsets, sudden changes. It will be fun to watch him grow happy.
