Patches is ... unbelievable. Patches is a cat that blew our minds. When
the shelter staff called us about the Savannahs in their shelter they
said there was one fabulous Savannah that all of the staff was gaga
about. They said it was a wonderful big cat with spots on part of her
body and the rest was white. We smugly informed them that the cat MUST
be mix because everyone knows Savannahs don't have white on them! Once
again we were happy to have the experts from Savannah Rescue with us.
Not only was Patches identified as a purebred Savannah but she's an F1!
We are definitely learning a lot from this group of cats.
While Patches' size and looks are amazing, it's her personality that is
really most breathtaking. She is a treasure. A love bug, a dog sized lap
cat, and a charming companion. This cat sets herself apart from every
other cat we've met in all of the years we've been doing Rescue. Someone
once told us that Savannah breeders are looking for ways to help the
Savannah breed stand apart from other wild breeds. Can we amateurs just
say "Hello ... Jackpot! Standing ovation here!" As far as we're
concerned she is the best combination of socialization, exciting looks,
great personality, and trainable house pet. While Purebreds Plus
believes in the altering of all shelter cats and pets, we have to admit
a certain sadness that Patches is out of the gene pool for the future of
the breed. We hope the person that originally bred Patches wins many
awards for her cats in the future.
Patches is an exciting cat but not for the faint of heart. If you're
looking to adopt this cat you must have F1 experience or at least EG
experience with one of the wild breeds. And if you don't "get" that last
sentence you probably shouldn't get the cat. F1 means that Patches is
one generation away from the Servals. She is 1/2 Serval so she's got a
bit o' the wild in her and anyone adopting needs to know what the
personality traits of these cats are like. For that reason we're going
to leave the screening and adoption process to Savannah Rescue. You are
welcome to contact Purebreds Plus for personality details, and to place
an initial application, but you should also consider going straight to
Savannah Rescue as they will be handling this adoption.
Here are some notes from Patches' foster mom: "She and I watched a movie together tonight. She sat on my lap the entire time. She most definitely needs a special home that will offer her tons of love and face time, but is able to tolerate her boisterous behavior. Her hobbies include water
skiing and interior redesign. While she was caged she would slap all of the water out of her dish. Then she would slip and slide on it. Seriously. I kid you not. It was hilarious. I tried so hard to get some video footage of it but was always seconds too late. She kept us in stitches while we were cleaning. Patches gives kisses and in case I haven't mentioned it, she's VERY affectionate!"
Patches is true to her breed: A highly curious, very active, and dominant cat. She will tolerate other cats but hisses at them if they get too close to her. She is just a baby after all and has lots of energy. She can get to the top of a 6 foot ledge in two leaps. She can also leap onto a table and overturn a two gallon jug of water. (Oh, and those digital cameras do still work even after doused with two gallons of water but you have to dry them off really fast.) She weighs about 12-13 lbs. now and is expected to be about 20 lbs. when she's fully grown. Right now she's so tall that she can reach her front paws up on the table top and peek across the table to see what's for dinner. She also likes to stand beside you like a teenage kid and look to see what's on the top shelf of the fridge.
Patches' curiosity also makes her a bit of an escape artist. She will take advantage of any open door, or any window that could be lifted just high enough for her to get out. You must be prepared to provide her with a very secure environment so she doesn't get outside. She really doesn't want to be outside but is fascinated by what is out there. She played peekaboo with a Peacock, and mentally stalked a goat for hours on end. She has also figured out that some doors have a handle that can be pulled down, so we always have to be careful to latch and lock doors behind us. We consider these traits to be joyful hi-jinks of a wonderful cat. If you don't think these behaviors are charming you might want to consider getting a Persian or a Ragdoll cat instead.
Patches loves her people. Loves loves loves her people! Other animals: Not so much. Since she is just a youngster it's possible that she would eventually bond with other cats in her permanent home, too. Only time and proper introductions will tell. Currently she coexists with other cats with no major altercations. The only time we might expect Patches to get a little agro with another cat would be if they take her bed. She stakes out HER bed somewhere up high. That is where SHE sleeps. Woe be unto the cat that sleeps in her bed and doesn't get the heck out when she wants it back. She will not back down and go elsewhere. We solved that little problem by giving the second cat it's own bed very high up, and we've not seen problems since.
Patches has been introduced to both large and small dogs. She hissed at them, but didn't show a tendency to be aggressive toward them. We think as long as the dogs are well behaved and all are given slow, safe introductions, she'd be fine in a home with a dog.
We'll try for better pictures, but she doesn't sit still long enough. She'll give a pretty pose but as soon as we turn attention to her, she comes over to rub on our legs.
Patches' adoption fee is $500. We do not ship cats. If you are not within
driving distance you will need to arrange to fly to Northern CA to meet
the cat in person. The cat must fly in cabin accompanied by adoptive parent.
